The Chinese zodiac (Shēngxiào) is a twelve-year cycle, each year associated with a different animal, traditionally symbolizing specific character traits, yin/yang qualities, and relationships to the five elements (wood, fire, earth, metal, water). It serves as a cultural system for interpreting and orienting personality, compatibility, and life rhythms, and is widely used in folklore, astrology, and visual arts.

Margit Denz's meditative animal sculptures draw on these traditions, but interpret them in a contemporary way: the seated, concentrated figures condense archetypal qualities into tranquil, silent objects of presence. In this way, a bridge is created between traditional symbolism and modern spatial aesthetics.
